Superior is located 6 miles Southeast of Boulder. It was founded in 1896 and incorporated on June 10, 1904. Superior was a coal mining town and named “Superior” because of the “Superior” quality of the coal found in the area. It is a wonderful town to call home and I moved to Superior in 2002.
Superior remained a very small town until 2001 when it was named the 3rd fastest growing town in America. It grew by 3000%. Now Superior has close to 4500 homes, 27 miles of trails, 19 parks and 594 acres of green space and open space. That totals almost 23% of the land.
Superior is a very active community. In the Spring, Summer and Fall, the city hosts several community events:
- On the 4th of July, the city host a huge pancake breakfast followed by their 4th of July parade.
- An Arbor Day celebration in April
- The Morgul Bicycle Race and Festival in May
- Summer Movie Nights in the park
- Chile Fest along with a Beer Fest that is co-sponsored by the Boulder Valley Rotary Club in September
- A Community Garage Sale in May
These community events are a great way for neighbors to meet each other.
Superior publishes a quarterly newsletter publicizing activities like basketball clinics, karate for kids, gold clinics, and boot camps
The schools in Superior are among the best in Boulder County and in Colorado.
Exciting new developments are happening, too. Superior is developing a a town center anchored by the Boulder Valley Ice and Indoor Sports Center. The center will house ice and hockey rinks, indoor soccer fields, basketball, volley ball and a sports fitness and training. The town center will also include restaurants, offices, retail, 2 hotels, a medical complex and approximately 1400 homes.
